Component One, The Fly Rod

post4_series-rod.jpg

To start off this miniseries build. I will go over selecting a fly rod. Here, I hope to give you a quick understanding for purchasing your equipment. Plus provide you with some knowledge of what features to look for in a rod.

The fly rod has three main functions.

  1. Used to cast the fly line.
  2. Gives you the ability to control the fly line on the water.
  3. And helps with fighting a fish when hooked.

Now, that you have determined the following details.

  1. What is my target species?
  2. Where do I plan to go fishing?
  3. How much do I want to spend?

This information is important for when it's time to head to the fly shop of your choice. There, the staff can give you advice on selecting the correct fly rod; weight, length, and action/flex you will need for your balanced outfit build. The word weight in this instance, does not refer to how much the rod actually weighs. It describes the correct fly line, which is weighted in grains, that a rod is designed to cast properly. A good rod length for most outfits will be 9 feet. As for rod action/flex; a medium action/flex will perform well for most casting styles, and is versatile in casting a wide range of fly types.

Also consider these features when selecting a fly rod; material the rod is made from, type of reel seat, chrome snake guides and tip, stripping guide with ceramic insert, alignment dots and warranty. And it should include a rod tube for travel/storage.

Another helpful tip; when you find the fly rod you like, ask to give the rod a test cast. This way you can get a feel for the action of the rod. The fly shop will be more than happy to put on a test reel with line. Now, you can go outside and see how the fly rod feels when casting.

Balanced Outfit Build Details

Each component in your outfit build should be balanced or matched correctly. An example would be, the classic trout outfit; 5-weight 9-foot rod, 5-weight reel, and 5-weight fly line. Giving you the ability to cast a range of fly types and sizes. Every weight outfit from 1 to 15, will have its own range of fly types and sizes the outfit can cast effectively.
