Component Three, The Fly Line

post6_series-line.jpg

One more component is needed to complete your balanced fly fishing outfit. And that would be a weighted fly line. Fly line weights are measured in grains. The fly line is what makes fly fishing unique to other styles of fishing. You will be choosing a line specifically matched to your fly rod. This will enable the rod to load properly when casting. Again, the staff at the fly shop can guide you in selecting the correct fly line for your outfit. And before any backing or line is spooled onto the reel. You will need the specify if the reel is to be setup for a left or right hand retrieve.  The shop will be happy to spool your reel with the correct amount of backing, and attach the fly line to the backing.

The main function of the fly line.

  1. Bends/loads, the fly rod during the casting stroke.
  2. The weight of the line makes it possible to cast the fly line itself, a leader, and fly.

Rod, reel, and line. The outfit is complete. After working with the folks at the fly shop. You should have a better understanding of the gear you purchased. Now, you just need a leader and a couple of flies, and you're ready to hit the water.

Balanced Outfit Build Details

Each component in your outfit build should be balanced or matched correctly. An example would be, the classic trout outfit; 5-weight 9-foot rod, 5-weight reel, and 5-weight fly line. Giving you the ability to cast a range of fly types and sizes. Every weight outfit from 1 to 15, will have its own range of fly types and sizes the outfit can cast effectively.
