Fly Fishing Accessories Miniseries

post12_access1.jpg

In this miniseries, I'll go over some of the essential accessories you should purchase to go fly fishing. These accessories can make your time on the water be more productive.

Polarized Sunglasses
Before you make your first cast, buy a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from a stray hook when casting. Sunglasses also have the benefit of cutting glare from the water. This can help you spot fish, determine water depth, and see bottom structure.
Optional item: Retainer/leash to keep from losing sunglasses.

Nippers
Can be useful for cutting leader and tippet material, plus trimming knots. Some nippers include a needle at one end, to clean head cement from hook eyes.
Optional item: Zinger to pin on to clothing and hold nippers.

Forceps
Handy tool that is used for a variety of tasks.
  • Remove a hook from a fishes mouth.
  • Mash down hook barbs.
  • Crimp split shot.
Optional item: Zinger to pin on to clothing and hold forceps.

Fly Box
A simple foam lined fly box should work fine for securely holding your flies. The main function of the fly box is to store, protect and organize your flies. You don't want to have flies laying loose in a container. There's a good chance when opening the lid, they could fall on the ground or into the water.
