Am I doing this right?
To help you answer this question. I would highly recommend taking a fly casting lesson, from an experienced instructor. You will be very pleased with this decision. When I initially became interested in wanting to learn how to fly fish. That's what I did, took a lesson. I had no knowledge on how to fly cast. From my own experience as a beginner fly fisher. Taking a fly casting lesson was the perfect starting point for me. It helped me learn the basics of the fly cast and understanding how to accurately cast a fly line. Which, in turn made the lesson well worth the time and money.
Couldn't I just watch a video?
Sure you can learn to fly cast from a video, or even a book. There's a vast amount of content you can find to teach yourself to fly cast. The main benefit of a casting lesson is an experienced instructor. They will be able to evaluate your casing mechanics/stroke. Plus identify any flaws you may have while casting and help you correct these mistakes. This will give you a solid foundation on the fundamentals of casting. And that can make fly fishing more enjoyable.
How do I find a fly casting instructor?
1. Stop by or call a local fly shop in your area. Most offer fly casting lessons and would be willing to help you with getting started. If the shop does not offer lessons, ask for a recommendation. They will be happy to recommend an instructor to you.
2. Search Fly Fishers International website to find a certified casting instructor in your state. View the Interactive Map for details.
3. In your browser, search for, fly casting lessons for beginners near me, to find lessons in your area.
Now with some practice, you will be on your way to becoming an accomplished fly fisher. And before you make your first cast. Put on a pair of sun or safety glasses to protect your eyes from a stray hook when casting.
