With so many choices for each component, I can see the frustration. A beginner fly fisher may have. This is why it is important to get some good advice from the people who have the knowledge and experience. And that is from the staff at a reputable fly shop. They should be willing to answer all your questions. Plus be patient with you when putting together your first fly fishing outfit.
Before I purchased my first fly fishing outfit. I was able to get some good advice from the instructor/guide who had taught me how to fly cast. This was very helpful in understanding of what I should purchase. And for me, that was a standard trout outfit. Because when I first wanted to learn how to fly fish, it was for trout.
My First Purchase
- Fly Rod; Orvis Silver Label 5wt, 9', 2 pc., Mid Flex
(Please remove the plastic wrapped around the cork handle. That's for shipping, not for fishing.) - Fly Reel; Orvis Battenkill 5/6, with click and pawl drag
(When not using the reel for awhile, it is good practice to back the drag all the way off.) - Fly Line; Orvis Trout Double Taper, Floating, 5wt

Balanced Outfit Build Details
Each component in your outfit build should be balanced or matched correctly. An example would be, the classic trout outfit; 5-weight 9-foot rod, 5-weight reel, and 5-weight fly line. Giving you the ability to cast a range of fly types and sizes. Every weight outfit from 1 to 15, will have its own range of fly types and sizes the outfit can cast effectively.
