Downside risk to profits; Upside opportunity for human flourishing

Class: Thanks to each of you who have demonstrated support for Ukraine! This weekend I asked a friend why so few business leaders have supported Ukraine on social media. He said two words. "Downside risk..."

The actual quote was, “They only see downside risk; no upside for them in commenting.”

After we hung up, I thought of a three word response,

"God or Mammon"

“No one can serve two masters. For either you will hate the one and love the other; or else you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.
 —Jesus

It’s clear which god all too many people serve…

You know that we begin each class by having everyone chant, “The world needs more entrepreneurs!” Including corporate entrepreneurs.

To which I alone add, “Committed to human flourishing!”

By taking a class on new venture strategy, students have demonstrated a commitment to—or, at least an interest in—the first statement. But they may not be ready for the second statement.

And I don’t want to coerce them into saying that.

I do want to plant the seed in their minds that there is something more important than Mammon.

And, this is a time when something higher than money is at stake.

So, again, for those of you standing with Ukraine thanks! Thanks for your efforts on behalf of human flourishing!
