Alaska Standards Easy Access

Alaska Standards eBook (1).png

The Alaska standards website is notoriously hard to navigate.  Standards are buried in PDFs and Word docs, which makes them difficult to access, especially from your phone.  As the principal of a school, this has made it difficult for me to learn all of the standards used by all of my teachers from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Over the last couple of years, I've tried several different tools to help with accessibility.  My goal was to be able to access the standards from my phone, iPad, or computer while I walked through classrooms.  The standards needed to be quickly accessible with a limited number of taps on my phone. They needed to be reformatted in a way that made them easy to read and scroll.  Finally, the standards needed to be formatted in a way to allow specific standards to be sharable.

This summer I finally decided to just make my own website using 37signals' new product called Writebook.  Writebook runs on my own server and is accessible as a website that acts more like an app.  If you are on a phone, saving this website to your homescreen will save a Progressive Web App (PWA), which is really still just a website with some app like functions.  In my case, the PWA saves your place in my book of Alaska Standards, as well as your view settings.  These are both big time savers and makes the experience that much more efficient, especially when you are jumping in and out of the standards multiple times in a day.  The PWA functionality allows all of this to happen seamlessly.

So check it out.  It lives here on my project website.  http://books.hrgrvs.net Click the list view button to see a nice list of grade levels and content areas.

Save this website to your homescreen on your phone and keep all of the Alaska Standards in your pocket.  Click that list view button and it will save that setting for you the next time you visit.  Also, notice that each header is a shareable link.  Did you see a lesson and want to let the teacher know that you noticed what they were working on?  Message them the link and share some notes.  Are you working on some lesson plans?  Use this site as a quick reference to make sure that your hitting the correct rigor for your grade.

This is a an ongoing project and there is still more formatting and editing to do.  If you notice some formatting issues, please let me know, or just drop me a note and let me know what you think.  I did this for myself, but others have already let me know that they are finding it useful.  If it's useful to you, I'd love to hear about it.
