There is a future in which we are able to fully decouple resource production from the natural environment. Rather than extracting from fragile ecosystems, we can engineer "artificial" environments that can sustain us while allowing nature to heal. In Whole Earth Discipline, Stewart Brand envisions exactly this: "I want commercial wood grown directly. Let it be engineered as clean low-lignin pulpwood, or as timber so straight-grained and close-grained and beautiful and inexpensive that cutting a wild tree for lumber would seem ludicrous" (197). This future is within our grasp. Through gene editing technologies, we now possess unprecedented control over plant resilience and agricultural yield. We are seeing success stories, but also cautionary tales of corporations using gene editing to create and exploit a biological dependence.
In systems analysis, this phenomenon is known as the "Shifting the Burden" archetype. It is the core feedback loop of addiction: an intervenor maintains or improves some state of a system without addressing the underlying system dynamics. The addictive substance masks the degradation while actively worsening it. Eventually, a complete dependence forms as removing this intervenor triggers withdrawal and exposes the true, degraded state of the system. Modern farming follows this exact dynamic. Soil exhaustion is temporarily masked by the use of fertilizer and gene edited crops which creates a vicious cycle that will collapse when the system reaches its hard limits.
The way out of this dilemma is to change the system's architecture to build resiliency and stop the degradation. It's to establish new feedback loops which either release the intervenor loop and strengthen the system or build a new system which actually takes the intervenor into account. As global demand for resources will only grow, we can use our new technologies to engineer new systems to meet it rather than covering over our current insufficient systems. Gene editing allows us to engineer efficient and nutrient crops. Vertical farming allows us to stack greenhouses on top of each other and create an artificial growing environment. Nuclear energy can provide the immense amounts of carbon-free power needed to run these dense greenhouses. Today, agriculture consumes the vast majority of our land, but through these new technologies we can change that. By concentrating on changing the underlying systems, we can not only improve the food production system, but also free up the land to rewild, giving us the space to live in the natural world instead of just consuming it.
