In our daily lives, we are constantly inundated with spam, ads, and a barrage of content we never asked for. Whether it's scrolling YouTube and hitting a wall of ads, or opening an inbox full of junk mail from mailing lists that automatically checked the "subscribe" box for us, the core issue is the same: the internet is constantly pushing unwanted information at us.
Our default way of handling this problem is to view the internet through the metaphor of a post office. We see the information flowing towards us as letters traveling into our device's "mailbox". We sequester these letters into folders, blacklist senders we don't want to hear from, and actively unsubscribe from mailing lists we no longer need. We try to stem this flow by removing our address from public spaces or telling the postman to not deliver messages from specific sources.
This metaphor is a great way of understanding the basic structure of the internet, as letters getting sent to and from a sender and a destination. There is an assumption, however, that the internet is a passive utility. It assumes a postal system that simply routes messages from point A to point B. The modern web, however, is built on ad-based algorithms designed to actively manufacture and push content for a profit. Additionally, traditional spammers constantly find workarounds by spoofing addresses or formatting junk to look legitimate. This metaphor puts the burden entirely on the user and implies that if you are receiving junk, you must have accidentally subscribed or left your address somewhere.
To handle the immense amount of connections of the modern web, we can shift to a more technical metaphor: the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, which defines the internet as a set of layers that data passes through. This model defines how data is structured as it is sent across the internet, changing the protocol depending on the medium the information is traveling over and the applications using it. Using this metaphor, we can prevent unwanted connections by building layers to block out certain information by default. Our interaction with the internet then shifts from a push relationship where we are constantly receiving information to a pull relationship where we grab the specific information we need. The default state becomes a closed connection, and we only pull the specific data and connections we want through the layers.
This model doesn't entail that we have to build a perfect whitelist immediately. Instead, we can utilize the concept of a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)—a sequestered waiting area outside our core network where connections are held until we actively allow them in. Ad-blockers and strict privacy tools operate on this logic, letting us pull what we need through our firewall while blocking out all other content. This metaphor can help us successfully manage the quality of our connections, but doesn't consider the human experience of actually processing that information.
To address this daily experience, we can then turn to the metaphor of sunlight. Instead of viewing the internet just as data, we can see it as ambient exposure. Just like the sun, our interaction with the internet mimics a daily rhythm. In the morning, the sun rises, and our capacity to handle this data exposure increases. During the day, we can successfully interact with the high-wattage glare of numerous connections, and complex information. And as evening approaches and the light wanes, we then turn down those bright internet interactions to better align with our biological rhythms.
This metaphor can then help explain the remedy to a familiar feeling of interacting with the internet described as "brain rot". The "brain rot" metaphor stems from an overexposure to the internet and implies a permanent, internal decay of our mental abilities with little to no path to recovery. Instead, we can imagine this overexposure as a sunburn where we are overexposed to the digital interactions on the internet. Recovery in this frame of mind doesn't mean abandoning the outdoors forever, but instead requires stepping into the shade and taking time to rejuvenate.
By using a combination of these metaphors to understand our digital experience, we can form an intentional relationship with the devices that surround us. We can ensure our mailbox is full of high-quality letters that we pulled up through the architectural layers designed to catch the traffic we don't want, and ultimately have the ability to modulate our exposure in a way that protects our digital skin.
