Scratchpad Scribbles: More About Mentoring

I started the year by deciding I wanted to do more for others. One of the easiest ways I have found to do that is mentorship. It doesn’t take much to be a mentor besides willingness and a little bit of time.

You might not think you have much to share. But to someone who is getting started, you are a wealth of knowledge. You have seen what they will see. And experienced what they will experience. Sharing your story can help them to avoid some painful lessons. You can make their careers and lives better, simply by being willing to give them some time.

And here is the secret. You’ll get a ton out of it. Likely more than they do. Some of my most important realizations have come while answering a mentee’s question. And some of my biggest knowledge gaps were revealed while talking to a mentee. They walk away with a list of things to learn and so will you.

So if you want to give back and make yourself better, consider giving some of your time to others. Find someone you work with who could use some extra help. Or sign up for a mentoring program online. Whatever way you do it, I guarantee you won’t regret it.
