Matt Webb has made an AI powered clock that tells the time by generating a new poem every minute. What an awesome idea, an idea that I’ve seen this idea evolve over the last year, and last week he launched it on Kickstarter. This is the kind of thing that couldn’t have existed a few years ago, and now it can. Even though this small thing seems trivial, I think it’s a forerunner for many new kinds of interactions that we will be having with technology over the coming years. To get it to this stage Matt has had to work on the technology aspect of course, but also the product design, the questions around what this thing would not be, the supply chains, and the marshalling of forces to try to get enough attention to get it over the line with a Kickstarter.

Matt has so many interesting takes on the intersection of technology and society, and one of my favourites is the idea that we are heading towards a world where intelligence will be too cheap to metre. We will end up with “smart” interfaces. I was trying to get some laundry done today with a washing machine that I’ve not used before. If only I could have talked to this washing machine and asked it to set itself to the best configuration for my task. I think we will end up there at some point.
