openRxiv just announced a program for structured experimentation - https://openrxiv.org/openrxiv-labs-launch/
Of note the first experiment they have announced will be in partnership with https://curvenote.com/ Curvenote received YC-backing and raised a modest amount of initial funding too (https://curvenote.com/news/curvenote-seed-round). They do this while maintaining a strong open source stance.
I think it is very healthy to see a collaboration like this between entities that are aligned on vision and purpose, but that also have quite different sustainability models. In my mind having a diversity of approach is critical when we are facing an immediate future of high uncertainty.
