Solo work, Pair work and Teamwork

A Japanese comedian said there are 3 types of work: solo work, pair work and 3+ works. I like this idea.

Solo work is like a novel writer. Of course novel writers work with editors or so but they usually write novels alone. J.K. Rowling, the writer of Harry Potter series, sometimes stayed at a hotel in her living city in order to be alone for writing.

Pair work is like an editor of writing novel, comic, etc. Editors usually work with assigned writers, discussing with him/her, editing his/her work, in order to improve product.

3+ work is like a manager. Generally managers involve other people to work. We can say it as "teamwork". Any employee's work can be teamwork if they're in a team.

Today people are connected with the Internet and many work became teamwork. Programmers are strongly connected by the Internet even if they work at home so they're discussing and review teammate's work each other. Office workers is easy to contact with business customers by call, mail, or other Web tools.

I don't think it's bad because most people are also good at teamwork. Humans are social species and have been growing by making communities. So it's good for most people that many works became teamwork. And I know group work can make bigger thing than alone.

However, there actually are people who need to go solo in order to achieve huge result. We know some people achieved huge result alone, such as Carl Jung, Isaac Newton, or Stephen Wolfram. They tried to be alone because they can't achieve things in they were with others. Some of them interrupted to contact with others when they wanted to focus on their work.

I won't say which is better or not. I don't think that discussion is worth to do. I want to say that we should know it and we should work with their following style. Then, we can boost our work productivity.

For me, I'm really good at solo work. It doesn't come from my ego but my experience. My personality is really likely to be nervous when I engage the pair work and teamwork. I manage to be worried others thought and that causes decrease my skill and productivity. I could run extraordinary when I'm solo.

Now I'm a director and directing team, communicating with other teams but I've been trying to make them solo work. Using documentations instead of meetings, Using a ticket tool and a message board instead of chat tool. Those are because I want to protect my focus time and get rid of cost of human relations. (You know we usually have concerns on human relations right?)

Of course we need good relationship with co-workers or teams and I frequently to have a talk with them, but I separated improving relationship work from proceeding things work. I'll write about this in another article.

Anyway, I'd like to told that there are solo work, pair work and teamwork and we should know which type of work we do and which type we're good at. We shouldn't mix in different type works. It can cause wasted discussion if one team includes different types like "Why don't you work with me" vs. "Why don'y you let me work." So wasting.

Today I feel we are difficult to raise that we want to go solo because some people think it's selfish. Especially Asia society including Japan has Groupism, derived from Confucianism. Actually I was sometimes told that I was selfish even thought I went solo for achieving work.

If we want to be good managers, we should know there are some independent workers. Of course independent workers person like me need to understand most people are good at pair work and teamwork so we should clarify why we need to be alone to achieve.
