Let’s pretend for a moment there’ll still be history books a hundred years from now, and they look back at the first half of the twenty-first century. From our perspective right here, there’s a rise of authoritarianism, ethno-nationalism, evangelical white supremacy, racism, and straight-up fascism, and we can see how these elements have been allowed to rise: courtesy of the news media that made them respectable by engaging in the most bizarrely contorted bothsidesism on the one hand and by giving them airtime and op-eds and interviews on a daily basis on the other, and courtesy of almost all political parties which, instead of nipping these elements in the bud, adapted to their positions bit-for-bit to compete for votes—all of which commenced to erode and dismantle two of the most important fail-safes of democracy, namely to not cooperate with nazis and to uphold the right of asylum. But what these unlikely future textbooks will probably also note is that all this could be seen, in hindsight, as preparations for the approaching climate catastrophe, preparations that institute both the kind of borders you need and the kind of mindset you need to keep climate refugees out by any means possible, while at the same time blocking climate action on purpose for economic convenience. Yes, I’m not in a good mood.
As to my output last week, there’s a brief review of Dune and Dune: Part Two at my primary blog between drafts, and I uploaded the first new Singapore albums on Flickr, Singapore Strait (13 images) and People’s Park Complex (9 images). Additionally, I created two buckets at Flickr where I can toss in various non-album shots from Singapore and Düsseldorf, respectively. Plus, there’s my Instagram account betweendrafts, where I also cross-post a lot, and my daily vintage travel-squaries at Pixelfed.
