Yesterday, from around 4pm until the end of the night, we lost all connectivity to the Internet.
I work from home and I first noticed my WiFi wasn’t working on my computer. So, I tried my phone and iPad, but nope - no Internet through WiFi there either. It’s notmy WiFi routers or anything like that, our stupid ISP (Internet Service Provider) has been causing a bunch of trouble lately. (And I confirmed, by calling them, that they had an “unplanned outage” 🤦♂️)
Next, I turned off WiFi on my phone in an attempt to use Verizon’s cell towers… Hmm, still no Internet. Tried my iPad (I have a cellular version, so that should’ve gone through the cell tower too). Nothing. Had my wife try on her phone — still nothing!
At this point, other than wondering (and maybe worrying a little — get your tin foil hats ready 😬) if we’re under a cyber warfare kind of attack, we realized how dependent we are on being ALWAYS CONNECTED.
We ended up going out to dinner, since there wasn’t much we could do at home. I couldn’t work, my wife couldn’t be on social media (or whatever she would’ve been doing), and my kids couldn’t stream movies. This is the world we live in now — being always connected — which is nice in so many ways, but also kind of scary sometimes. We feel so lost and disconnected when we can’t connect to the outside world for a few hours.
Oh, and our cell data worked fine once we left our neighborhood — so, just our closest-to-home tower was the problem? And this morning everything seems to be working again. Back to being always connected again, hopefully.

Update: I spoke — err, typed — too soon! Maybe 15 minutes after sending out this blog post it was all out again. I’ve been working the day from Starbucks… It looks like everything should be fixed sometime tonight (or overnight) — I sure hope so! 🤞
