(Don't forget to read the snippet at the bottom of this post for another update.)
When I started creating my new website a couple weeks ago, I was thinking it might be good to have an email to go with it. Something like “jason@<mydomain>” would make sense — so I did that. After about a day with it (and hating every moment of it, for various reasons), I decided I’m still using HEY as my primary email. I have forwarding rules set up for all my emails, so it doesn’t really matter which email address people send things to, I’ll get it in the one I like to use. I just wanted to reevaluate my opinion of the service (or really, my opinion of the other options) again… and during the creation of my new website seemed like the right time.
Quick note, though: I fully deleted the jason@<mydomain> email (so I won’t have to pay for the custom address going forward), so don’t actually try emailing it. The “forwarding rules” comment applies to all the other emails (basically Gmail accounts) I’ve set up over the years.
There was a reason I started using HEY almost a year ago when it came out (well, many reasons) and they still ring true. I think there’s a way to link a custom domain with your HEY account and maybe I’ll do that someday… but for now, I’m still happy with using the same @hey.com address I set up a year ago. If you haven’t tried out HEY and you hate email the way it currently is, you should check it out.
P.S. I wonder if I can get a referral fee if you sign up! 😜
Also, having HEY World be part of it makes blogging super easy. That’s what I’m using to write this blog post right now if you didn’t notice.
I was going to set up a blog directly in my website, which would be nice as it’d be attached to my actual domain with the extension /blog… but blogs through websites are kind of a pain. Yes, you get some more options than you do with HEY World, but they mostly get in the way and make things complicated. It’s also more difficult to write a blog post — you have to go the website manager and navigate to the blog section and hit “+” to start a post. I know, that’s not an impossible task, lol… but for this post (on HEY World), I’m just writing an email and BAM 💥, blog post is created!
Anyway, there are some unsolicited thoughts about HEY after nearly a year using it.
What can I say, it’s email — which isn’t all that exciting — but when one service/platform (HEY) is much better than others (like every other service/platform) and they were able to rethink email… and the others are still the same old email everyone hates to deal with, it makes a difference.

15 May 2022 update:
I'm still using HEY, but I moved to HEY for Domains! I still get HEY and my own domain's email address.
20 July 2025 update:
And more changed over the past few years... I'll probably never learn! I left HEY for a couple reasons, but kept on missing some of the great things we got with the service/platform. I also wanted my email to be directly through my website/domain. I still like that idea, but I learned that the email was difficult for many people to understand (jason@jasonmitchell.io), especially non-techies that don't understand a TLD that's not ".com". I'm coming back to HEY again for personal email—we'll see if it lasts!—but at least for now I'll go with jasonmitchell@hey.com since it's easy enough to say and understand. It's not fully custom if I stay with this option, but I do plan on keeping the website (also, at least for now haha!)... And, again, I still missed a lot of the nice features you get with HEY!
