The next few days (after Julia's surgery)

December 6, 2021

Friday (the day after surgery)

Julia was really drugged up and out of it. She would respond to us, but mostly just with nods or a quiet “yeah”. The tubes that would drain blood from inside, where she was cut open (sorry, graphic I suppose), were draining more blood than the surgeon wanted. They actually took her back to surgery that night. Cut her hip open again (basically reopening a portion of the original, very large, cut). He was able to clean out the pool of blood and do what was needed for it to not bleed too much again. She went from having two blood drains (one in her hip and one in her leg) to having an additional two (so, three in her hip now, plus the one in her leg).

Saturday

She was awake! It was like a complete turnaround from the day before. She was fully alert and talking. The pain didn’t really seem too bad and she was able to press the button to add more medicine, when needed (well, only every 8 minutes). Plus, they had a bunch of other drugs going in her IVs. Yes, she has “IVs”, plural—one in each hand, one in her wrist, and the port she has in her chest (that was put in by surgery a few months ago for chemo and whatever else). She also has those medicine ball things that release a specific amount of medicine directly into her hip and leg on a schedule.

Sunday (yesterday)

It seemed like the discomfort has really been starting for Julia. Luckily she’s now able to sit the bed up to a more upright position. Since the surgery, she’s needed to stay flat on her back—now she can sit the bed up, but she still can’t move around or anything. Gotta keep her pelvis aligned with her shoulders for a while. Last night, Wendy (Julia’s mom) said she was the most uncomfortable she’s been so far, by far. 🥺

Monday (today)

Wendy has been staying with Julia most of the time (also sleeping at the hospital) and I’ll go hang out for a while everyday. I was going to swap places with Wendy today and spend the night at the hospital, but I think we’ll push that to tomorrow. One reason is that Julia has been very uncomfortable and wants Mom by her side constantly (probably Mom specifically, not Dad 😢 — I understand, though)… also, Aria (our 2 year old) isn’t feeling the best today. I’ll stay with her today and try to swap with Wendy tomorrow.
