With our next WWDC starting in just four days, I thought I’d put together a quick list — a wishlist if you will, for things I’d like to see at WWDC21.
SwiftUI
We’ve already had SwiftUI coming up on two years now and they improved it a bunch last year. I’m only starting to use SwiftUI again for work (and haven't had much time for my side project, which is in SwiftUI), but would love to see how Apple makes it even better (and we know they’re going to!).
SwiftData
Let’s give Core Data a Swifty update, please, Apple. I’m sure it’d work great with SwiftUI! 😁
AR
I only ever tried out ARKit three or four years ago when I was just getting serious about Swift / iOS development, so I’m not familiar with it right now. I plan on diving into it more in the future, but currently have other things on my plate. Either way, more advances in ARKit would be great!
… and perhaps AR glasses ( Glass?)?! Is it too early to ask for that? Most likely… but once they come out is when AR can move from a novelty item to something more serious. I expect we’ll all be wearing AR glasses in the future — but they have to come out first!
VR
Personally, I’m more interested in AR than VR, but it’d be cool to see something VR related from Apple this year.
iPadOS
Apple split iOS up to give the iPad its own version, iPadOS, but it doesn’t seem like anything big has come from that yet. I’m not sure what it could be, but a powerful update to iPadOS would be great. I love using my iPad already (possibly my favorite device to use), but it seems like there could be more — it’s a super powerful machine!
Xcode Lite for iPad
Speaking of iPad… I don’t think I’d ever want to use an iPad as my main development machine, but it would be nice to have a lite or touch version of Xcode on iPad.
More M1
Not that I’m able to upgrade yet, but I’d love to see more Apple Silicon devices… maybe M1X or M2? Whatever they call it, the more powerful “pro” laptops are ready for their upgrades. So, 14” and 16” M1X MacBook Pros - let's go! 😂
More?
I’m sure there’s a bunch I’m forgetting, but there’s my short wishlist.
