The cinematography in Incendies is so incredibly real that it feels like a documentary at times.
It's one of the most truthful depictions of war that I have ever seen. The destruction of the lives present in this movie is the ultimate consequence of war. One of the main goals in the every war is the dehumanization of the individual, and this movie shows it very well. And even worse, the war doesn't affect only the generations that fight it, but all the generations after. Jeanne and Simon are sons of a war they didn't even participate in but are now entangled in all the mess that came from it. And they will be forever.
The way sound is used in this movie is absolutely amazing. The soundtrack of this movie contains only two songs, and they are used in such a clever way. This is the way a soundtrack of a movie should behave. Use it as seasoning to elevate the movie, not as one of the main ingredients.
The only real critique I could give to this movie is the pace on the first act. Although I understand the whole story needs to be set up and there's good scenes in it, the first act feels boring at times. Nevertheless, it's a good show of the life in the Middle East.
