The Fog is a John Carpenter classic that has many of the elements of his other movies like The Thing or Halloween.
Sound and light are the main highlights of this movie. In the beginning, the scarce amount of light and sound creates an eerie atmosphere that then starts to contrast with the brightness of the fog and the sharp sound of the killings/dangerous moments.
This eerie atmosphere is very similar to the feeling of “The Thing”, a movie made by the same director two years later. Carpenter is very good at setting the atmosphere throughout most of the film to then break it abruptly when needed. This contrast elevates what are supposed to be the climax moments.
Where this movie somewhat falters is on the editing side which could have been smoother. Especially on those kid scenes at the beach/house in the beginning that doesn't really add much to the story besides the premonition theme. This premonition was dispensable, and I think the movie would have gain if it didn't try to explain itself.
Overall it's a good movie that I recommend to watch. It serves as a sort of playground for the cult classic “The Thing” made two years after.
