Poem: Saints Who Have and Have Not Seen

Take all human eloquence,
conjunctions and well measured
metaphors; consider fine prose,
and a voice that never cracks
or breaks or stutters with indecision.
Listen to public prayer,
and marvel at combinations
of words and speech,
sweeter even than honey.

Taste and see that God
is pleased by the broken voice,
pouring out simple words
from a contrite heart
more than the crisp voice
of saints who haven’t seen
their sin anywhere
for a while.

About John Mitchell

I can trace my love for reading and writing poetry back to my earliest days listening to my parents read the Psalms to me as a child. And to my parents, I owe a great debt.
