The (very excellent website) The Pudding recently did an analysis of Rolling Stone's top albums of all time and it's a great reminder of what you can learn from "top x lists" or "best y" awards.

On top are the albums sorted by the decade they were released.
On bottom are the judges sorted by the decade when they were in their teens (when most people tend to form their musical tastes).

Just a little reminder not to take these things too seriously (as objective measures of quality). Although they are a pretty good measure of the subconscious preferences and values of whomever is doing the judging.
