Magic is real, but it's not special

The most unrealistic part of fantasy stories is that there are people in them who think magic is amazing or special.

Anyone who has:
  •  graduated from school
  • taken out a loan
  • gotten married
  • had a kid
  • used a passport
has done magic.

What did you think you were doing when you imbued your sigil on a piece of parchment with special words in the presence of a person imbued with special powers to "poof" change your world in a real way?

Improvisors have been practicing magic right under our noses for YEARS and everyone thinks it's just frivolous entertainment.

But "those are just examples of bureaucracy" i hear you cry. "when magicians do magic, it's amazing!"

to which i say:

Magicians are doing tricks (or rather...)

The real magic that magicians do is moving the audience.

they speak words & wave their arms around to change something inside people...you know, magic

In and Of Itself by Derek DelGaudio is the perfect example of this.

Using illusions to do real magic.

Changing something inside other people (hopefully for the better) is something all of us do all the time, every day without even thinking. Magic is the most normal thing in the world.

What would happen if you became conscious of the fact that you're constantly doing magic and tried to use that power for good?

What would you do?
