November 2024: 4 Things I learned (😠, 📺, 🦷, 🎮)

If it's what you do, have a great Thanksgiving!

  1. There’s a long history of turning an epithet into a name the group calls itself. Famous examples include “Nazi” and “Impressionist”
  2. Day 31 of a naval submarine mission can be the lowest morale day because that's when app downloads (Spotify, Netflix, etc.) expire.
  3. Bluetooth (the tech in your phone that connects your phone to all sorts of stuff) is 26 years old! It was named after King Harald Bluetooth who ruled as King of Denmark from 958-986 BCE. He united various tribes into a kingdom (the way Bluetooth unites your phone and accessories). The Bluetooth logo is a combo of Scandinavian runes for "H" and "B." Harald Bluetooth's initials.
  4. The youngest ever person credited with discovering an official exploit is a 5 year old kid who discovered a bug in Xbox Live. He wanted to bypass his dad's login so he could play video games. He did it by entering the incorrect password, sending him to a password verifications screen where he repeatedly hit space and then enter.
