I've always been sceptical about meditation. It didn't seem practical, it wasn't logical and I thought that meditation was just an alternative to sleeping for people who couldn't get a good night's sleep.
I also knew a lot of friends who tried meditation but rarely meditated after the first try or found that they didn't have time to do so. When I started meditation six months ago, I expected to quit soon again....but here I am still going on.
Surprisingly, meditation actually takes remarkably little time if you manage to make it part of your routine (like everything else). On average I spend only 20 minutes per sitting. For context: this includes setting up my posture, doing some body-scanning meditation at the beginning, meditation on breathing and meditation on a topic of my choice. It also includes closing down meditation.
To meditate, I use the Headspace app. The nice thing about this meditation program is that it offers different meditation types and you can pick what fits best for you. There are many meditation types available (just take a look at their website). These differ in terms of technique, but most focus on one or more of these points:
- learning to be present in the moment;
- listening to your inner voice;
- feeling empathy with others;
- controlling your inner critic;
or (my favourite point)
or (my favourite point)
- learning concentration (focusing).
Is meditation worth trying? I truly believe that it is!. I expected meditation to make me more relaxed and at ease, but meditation turned out to have a much bigger impact on my life. The meditation program that I use focuses on concentration meditation (just concentrating on your breathing). This type of meditation has helped me with my work. It helps me be clearer, more objective, more present and productive.
I would recommend you to try meditiation for at least 2 weeks, spending 20 minutes in the morning or before sleep and see how it works for you.
