About five years ago, I would try to sleep the least amount I could.
6 hours was my goal every night.
I fell hook, line, and sinker for hustle porn. The illusion that success is tied to the amount of time I worked sucked me in.
This resulted in much misery for me and those who had to deal with sleep-deprived Jordan.
I had not yet realized that something matters more than energy and time.
That something? The ability–and systems–to make better decisions.
When my eyes could barely stay open, I was making horrible decisions. I was “putting in the time,” but was I improving? I would have to do the same thing three times over because I kept messing up.
Not only that, but I was also less creative. This also resulted in less-than-optimal decisions concerning creativity.
In the five years since being a hustle addict, I’ve come to adore sleep. Sleep is what enables me to perform at my highest level.
I now sleep at least 8 hours every night.
And I focus more on optimizing the time I’m awake than on trying to be awake longer.
I realize that time awake ≠ time being productive.
While it’s an easy measurement, it’s not accurate and unstainable in the long run.
And that’s my goal: to still do what I’m doing (i.e., writing and marketing daily) in 60 years.
If that’s my goal (instead of being awake the longest), I will prioritize sleep, eating healthy, and rest days.
Whatever your goal is, that will dictate your actions and habits.
What are you prioritizing right now? Don’t like your answer?
Switch up your goals.
