A precious moment when working on an idea is seeing the first spark. There is no fire yet, but you sense the potential for the idea to burn brightly. Sometimes, this moment comes after building a lot; other times, just a bit is enough. But sparks aren’t born from pure contemplation—they find you with your hands dirty.
A few weeks ago, I had some time to spare while accompanying a relative at the hospital. I built an early spike for an idea I had been thinking about for a long time: a live reloader for Rails. What I built wasn’t usable in any way or form, but it convinced me there was something wonderful in the oven. I got that spark.
Sparks are personal and non-transferable. They are meant to serve you, so it’s perfectly fine if others don’t recognize them. These sparks ignite a surge of energy—one you’ll need badly, as often, ninety-five percent of the work still lies ahead after that first spark appears.
I had the luxury of having 37signals officially endorse this idea. Even if that hadn’t been the case, I would have taken this to the finish line in my free time out of pure engagement. Sparks are powerful.
To a 2025 full of sparks.
