My grandfather had just parked the truck. It was overcast and a bit chilly outside for a spring day in Arkansas. I was sitting in the passenger seat and we were about to jump out and walk into Lowes when I noticed a shopping cart come to life and move from the destination someone had carelessly left it. At first I wasn't sure the cart would move more than a couple feet but within a few seconds it was clear the wind had grabbed ahold and wasn't letting go.
The shopping cart picked up speed exponentially as it travelled from the front of the parking lot towards the back! There was nothing in the way for probably 60-70 yards and then WAM! Someone's vehicle in the very last parking spot objected to the cart's progress. To this day I wonder what that person thought when they came out and saw the massive dent in the side of their vehicle. Was that person a hard working Lowes employee leaving more room for customers or maybe a concerned motorist trying to avoid door dings? Didn't matter, mother nature doesn't have car insurance.
You can't hide from shopping carts
The lesson I take from this now is it's silly to think any amount of preparation will insulate you fully from life's hiccups. We can't control the wind and that's okay. If we learn to plan appropriately and deal with the inevitable problems that arise then we'll be better off.
Just to be clear I'm not advocating for not planning ahead. I'm one of those people that parks towards the back because I don't want to get door dinged. What I aspire to be is somebody who doesn't get mad at the wind.
