“Journal writing gives us insights into who we are, who we were, and who we can become.”
— Sandra Marinella
So, I’ve been journaling daily for over 100 days, which is exciting! This was something that when I set out to do it I didn’t think I’d enjoy as much as I have.
I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said it’s literally transformed my life for the better, which seems so strange to realise, but it really has!
So here are some pro’s and con’s I’ve found with daily journaling, in case you’re thinking about doing it yourself!
Pro’s:
- Tracking my mood and thoughts daily has grounded me. I am more present and aware of how I'm feeling, and can address anything that seems off pretty quickly.
- Retrospectively reviewing my week has kept me accountable in what I want to achieve, and humbled me when something took a lot more energy than I initially realised, or didn't quite turn out how I thought.
- Flexing that writing muscle seems to also trigger the creative side of my brain, often leading to me making music, or filming fun videos, and just increased creativity in general.
- I have started to appreciate and be grateful for the smaller things in life, like a nice coffee, or bumping into friends on the street. This has had a huge impact on my well being, day to day.
Con’s:
- As I reflect on a particularly tough day I can sometimes finish an entry not feeling much better than when I started. I’ve recently tried to focus a lot more on small, positive achievements on those particular days, and write mostly about those.
- Constantly writing and thinking about myself has lead me to worry that I’m shifting my natural thought process to be a lot more self-centered, which isn’t particular a quality I’d like to develop. Once again, focusing on things that I am grateful for within a day has helped with this.
- My hand get soooo sore from all the writing. Haha.
I’ve found so many things about myself that I love through journaling, and have a set of goals I want to work towards to make myself a better person.
I hope that you consider picking up this amazing habit for yourself.
