Julian’s Personal Newsletter 2024/07

Dear friends,

I’m back with a couple of personal and musical updates. Since I’ve been on a short vacation in July, I there aren’t any major progress updates but some impressions to digest and pass on.

But first of all, another announcement:

👉 An ambisonics fixed media rendering of „Arecibo“ will be played at Sonic Saturday (in cooperation with Ars Electronica) at Bruckneruni Linz on September 7. Be sure to drop by if you’re in the area!

Music I Enjoyed Listening To

Experimental cellist Christina Ruf has published an enticing ambient instrumental EP titled „Three Sunfish“ earlier this year. Aside from stunning and vividly composed soundscapes it impresses with crystal clear sound production with high attention to detail. Give it a listen!

A Book I Enjoyed Reading

J.M. Straczynski is one of my favorite sci-fi TV producers of all time. Confession: I think Babylon 5 is one of the best sci-fi shows of all time with what was at the time revolutionary computer graphics. I vividly remember counting the days each week until the next episode appeared.

I devoured most of his works and was deeply disappointed when Sense8 was discontinued. All the more was I thrilled of a new novel by him being published, “The Glass Box”.

The novel features the transition of a democratic society into authoritarianism told from the perspective of a woman being institutionalized as a corrective measure for participating in protests. The story is entertaining and features some unsuspected heroes and villains. Still it left me hanging in anticipation of a „Matrix“ moment, some plot twist that turns the readers‘ mental model upside down. JMS‘s craftsmanship had me expecting no less, but it didn’t arrive, which leaves a small trace of disappointment. Still it serves as an instructive example of the freedom and values humanity has built up since enlightenment and is about to trade in for promises of ultimate security and convenience. It was the perfect beachside light summer read for sure 🏖️.

Until next month, tata!
