In my journey to de-Google I joined Fosstodon it was a Mastodon instance — server where your content gets hosted/stored. It was the best place that aligned with my mission to de-Google as FOSS stands for Free Open Source Software which are tools and applications that anyone can inspect the code and use freely in a non commercial way it helped me move away from big tech especially Apple but this was short lived.
Due to the friction of day to day life like not being able to access my money via my banking app due to stupid play integrity — a bank and corporate problem basically saying your device is insecure when in fact it was the opposite plus little annoyances with messages to the missus using signal everyone else didn't want to move over, then there was the photo library sharing through iCloud, calendar events and invites, family passwords having to get everyone to move to a different password manager when these issues start affecting not just me I can live with it but my immediate family some like my grandmother and mother who don't understand how to use signal and can only use their default iMessage/FaceTime then it becomes a forever struggle having to ignore people instead of replying trying to get people to use new platforms I've grown tired of the struggles I'm getting old, I don't have the energy to fight much more I can put this energy into my blog and spending time making memories with my family than creating unnecessary frictions for them.
I still believe in FOSS/FLOSS and will still try to donate to services in the past as I was contributing to Fosstodon and Phanpy.social via Patreon, Molly via Open Collective and other projects directly like Signal but I feel the Fosstodon server no longer represents my day to day life especially when the posts will show sent via Ivory for iOS/MacOS which isn't a FOSS application.
So where did I move to? Did I quit the Fediverse? — no I didn't quit the Fediverse I am still in the process of removing as much Google services as possible which I aim to bring my Google account down to just YouTube getting rid of all other services but I found a paid Mastodon instance called Mastodon Green which has not many people active — as of writing just (951 users) run by Johan Empa with good community guidelines which is hosted in the EU and running on renewable energy plus 20 % of the membership fees goes towards planting trees. So while people may say I've become a tree huger or whatever or that I've given up on my fight for privacy and security I don't care I haven't I've just grown tired and just want to educate the average person (average Joe's) of the world on how they can limit their footprint, stay secure and safe on the internet and we should all be trying to limit our greenhouse emissions on the planet as we only have one, and although I can't afford to buy a electric car I can know that whenever I post on social media the servers hosting my data are in a secure location, with good privacy practices and I'm able to give back to the planet with trees being planted.
