I've been ruminating on the state of Big Tech and the Social Media platforms (i.e.: Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc.) in this country. Some issues are (but definitely are not limited to): the users are the product, tracking user's emails and web searches for ad revenue purposes, the divisive nature of social media, and the ongoing censorship issues associated with ALL these platforms in our Brave New World of the 2020s.
During the pandemic apocalypse year of 2020, I started working on "degooglefying" my electronic footprint. What else was I going to do other than make bread in my spare time? I've reduced the number of Google apps used on my iPhone and computers. My main search engine these days is DuckDuckGo. I haven't "googled" for anything in more than a year now. I am working on removing the word, the term, and the verb "google" from my vocabulary. It's not easy but I am doing the work to go back to using decentralized systems on the Internet.
Continuing this effort into 2021, I've been looking into email service options to replace my "free" Gmail account. Recently, I learned about the HEY email service and app from Basecamp. After looking into it and trying it out, I paid for a HEY for You email account. This will eventually replace all of my "free" email accounts but it's going to take some time to get things switched over. I'm looking forward to using HEY's streamlined workflows and features.
By the way, this HEY World blogging feature is nice too!
Cheers!!
