I start with two questions

When I use a new thing on the web, I have two questions up front:

1. What can it do?
2. What is it for?

The first question is easier to answer. I click around. I go through the settings. I find what other people are doing with the new thing. The first question is about curiosity and exploration.

The second question, though, can be tough. “What is it for?”, as in, what purpose does this have in general? But I also want to know what purpose for me personally.

“What is it for?” blends in to “How do I want to use it?”, and these questions can take time to answer. They can even remain unanswered.

Years ago, I started a personal blog out of curiosity. I tinkered with Blogger and later WordPress (question #1). I couldn't decide on one focus area (question #2), so I posted about movies, TV shows, articles I read, and bits of creative writing. I still don't have one answer to "What is it for?". My blog is for whatever I want it to be.

I like blogging, but every platform I've tried does way more than I need it to do. And that can feel cumbersome when I just want to write and click Publish.

HEY World is brand new, so I have two questions:

What can this do?
It's a super simple way to post your long-form thoughts online. I'm literally writing an email.

And what is this for?
I'll figure that out as I go. :)
