Looking for a Church Home

Reflections on the Church

As you probably know by now, Becky and I have moved. Isn’t there a lot to do when you move! Oh, my! So many things to do! 😱

One of the important things to do—it’s a priority, really—is to find a church home. That’s important to us, as we are sure it would be important to you.

🆘 So, we have a question for you: What should we look for in a church home? What value or values should we favor when looking for a new community of faith?

All of you have moved in the past, many of you may have relocated recently, and some of you may be in the process of moving right now. So, maybe you can help us. Maybe you can give us some good advice.

Should we look for a church home that is near where we live? It would be nice to worship in and feel a part of our community. On the other hand, driving farther is a small price to pay for a church home that checks many of our boxes.

Should we look for a church that feeds us? It’s hard to place a value on solid, life-relevant, and Bible-based preaching and teaching, much less inspirational worship. On the other hand, we should not depend on the church or others for our spiritual food.

Should we favor a church that offers opportunities for service? I wouldn’t feel right about choosing a church solely on the basis of what we can get out of it. We want to use our gifts. We want to be useful. Maybe we should look for a place, then, that appreciates what we might have to offer?

Should we look for a church where “we fit”? We’re not looking for a church where we agree with everything the leaders believe. There is no church that has 100% agreement on every decision and practice. But, what level of difference and disagreement should we tolerate? Obviously, some disagreement must and should be tolerated, while other areas of disagreement are game-breakers.

What do you think? (Seriously though, give us a reply! 🙏) We are praying for guidance and wisdom and would surely appreciate any advice or wisdom you have for us. We’ll keep you appraised of where we are in our search.
