Tesla Model Y Journey - 16,066 km driven and counting
Hello. My name is Kaushik and I'm a 2020 Tesla Model Y owner in Canada.
This is my first foray into blogging and I'm super excited to share my Tesla Model Y journey by the way of statistics, photo montages and road trips.
I hope the content will be informative.
Background
The Model Y isn't the first Tesla in our family. A 2019 Model 3 SR+ named SPOCK belonged to our family for just over a year from May 2019 to July 2020 in which we had driven approximately 30,000 km.
Rewind back about a month and a half. We hear that the service centre in our city now has Model Ys that we can check out. Filled with anticipation, we go to the service centre and find a White Performance Model Y. First off, we are really taken in by the stock white color.
Both me and my wife knew instantly that this would be the color to go with, and having debated Midnight Silver Metallic vs Red Multi Coat on our drive to the service centre, this took us by surprise and it came included with the Model Y at no extra charge! Awesome.
Überturbine wheels were absolutely smashing. That meant we had to pick the performance model, which was definitely out of budget. Therefore we settled for the 20" Induction Wheels at the 2500 CAD extra charge since we had gotten away with a color choice we agreed on for free.
I sit in the driver seat and adjust the seat to be comfortable for me aaaaaaaaaand IT WAS PERFECT! It was familiar, yet different, not too huge compared to our Model 3 yet roomier. Tesla had worked magic with the dimensions of the Model Y and my family agreed that had this vehicle existed when we were deciding on which Tesla model would be our first, the Model Y would be the sure shot winner!
We place our Order for a Model Y LR AWD with 20" Induction wheels the day after. We don't buy FSD yet (as we had done with our Model 3)
Model Y Delivery day - July 22,2020
The bond is still very strong with SPOCK, our Tesla Model 3 and so is the ambivalence. Are we making the right decision by trading in our Model 3 for a Model Y?
We collect our belongings from our Model 3, log out of the Tesla account. We stood outside and thanked our Tesla Model 3 for the fantastic Tesla experience it had provided us with and wished it well in its journey onward to a new owner.
We walk in, excited, and are immediately greeted warmly by the Tesla sales staff and taken to the delivery section of the service centre where we see,
Our 2020 Tesla Model Y.
WOW! Stunning! And as it turned out, near perfect build, remarkable, for an early VIN and quite contrary to what many other owners picking up their vehicles around the same time were experiencing. Stock chrome delete rules!
Approximately 8 months later, 16,066 km later, here's a couple of photos
A quick note on FSD - Our model 3 had the FSD package, which we bought when ordering the car. We decided to wait it out on our Model Y and guess how long that endeavour aged? 1 week :). Let's move on to some stats.
Statistics from 16,066 km of driving in Canada

Temperature vs Efficiency
Temperature has a direct correlation with efficiency within a certain range. I found the sweet spot to be between 15 and 20 deg C.
Battery Degradation
Surprised about the bump up in the middle of the graph? That is Tesla weaving their Engineering and Software magic. When we bought the Model Y, the EPA range advertised on the Canada website was 509km.
A few months later....
Tesla was able to increase the max range to 525km via an Over-the-air software update that optimized and improved the functioning of the HVAC system and the Motors.
Fascinating!
From the data, its clear that there's been almost little to no battery degradation. Tesla's battery pack is holding up well!
On that note, this concludes my first blog post! Watch out for the next one!
