The soft glow of Christmas lights filled Sarah’s cozy living room. The scent of pine and cinnamon wafted through the air, mingling with the faint crackle of the fireplace. Felix, her mischievous orange tabby, lounged near the hearth, one eye lazily watching the flickering flames.

Sarah adjusted the mistletoe she had hung in the doorway, stepping back to admire her handiwork. “Perfect,” she murmured to herself, brushing a strand of hair from her face. The little cluster of green leaves and white berries hung perfectly, just in time for her friend Jack to arrive.
She didn’t know exactly when Jack had become more than just a friend in her mind. Maybe it was his easy laugh or the way he always remembered to bring her favorite chai tea on their walks. This Christmas Eve, she had decided to take a chance—or at least to see if fate might lend her a hand under the mistletoe.
The doorbell rang, jolting her out of her thoughts. Felix perked up but didn’t bother to move. Sarah smoothed her sweater, took a deep breath, and opened the door.
“Hey, Sarah,” Jack said, his crooked smile making her heart skip a beat. He held up a tin of cookies. “Brought these. Hope your sweet tooth is ready.”
“Always,” Sarah replied with a laugh, stepping aside to let him in.
Jack shrugged off his coat and set the cookies on the counter. His eyes scanned the room, lighting up at the decorations. “You’ve really outdone yourself. It’s like stepping into a Christmas card.”
Sarah chuckled, feeling a mix of pride and nerves. “Thanks. I wanted it to feel festive.”
As the evening went on, they chatted over mugs of hot cocoa, the warmth of their conversation matching the cozy ambiance. Felix, not one to be ignored for long, eventually sauntered over and climbed onto Jack’s lap, purring loudly.
“Looks like I’ve been chosen,” Jack said with a grin, scratching behind Felix’s ears.
“He doesn’t do that for just anyone,” Sarah teased.
Jack’s gaze lingered on her, his expression soft. “I feel honored.”
As the clock ticked closer to midnight, Sarah stood to refill their mugs. When she returned, Jack had moved to the doorway where the mistletoe hung. He glanced up, his eyes widening slightly.
“Mistletoe,” he said, his tone playful.
Sarah’s heart raced. She hadn’t planned on this moment coming so naturally. “So it is,” she replied, trying to sound casual.
Jack stepped closer, his gaze steady and warm. “Well, it’s tradition, right?”
Before Sarah could respond, a blur of orange fur shot through the air. Felix leapt up, swiping at the dangling mistletoe. The sprig swayed wildly as Felix tumbled to the floor with a triumphant meow, the tiny decoration clutched in his paws.
Both Sarah and Jack burst into laughter. “Looks like Felix has claimed the mistletoe,” Jack said, bending down to pick up the cat.
Sarah shook her head, trying to suppress her giggles. “He always has to be the center of attention.”
Jack held Felix up, studying the cat’s smug expression. “Think he’s telling me to try again?”
Sarah blinked, caught off guard. “Maybe.”
Setting Felix down, Jack stepped closer to her, his smile soft but sure. “No mistletoe this time. Just us.”
Her breath caught as he leaned in, his lips brushing hers in a kiss that felt like warmth and snowflakes and everything magical about Christmas.
Felix, satisfied that his job was done, curled back up by the fire, purring softly as the two humans finally found their moment.
