Presents – The joy of giving and receiving - Short Story
Mittens and the Christmas Gifts
Snow blanketed the world outside, muffling the sounds of the bustling town. Inside Emily’s small, cozy living room, the warmth of the fireplace cast flickering shadows across the walls. The Christmas tree stood tall in the corner, adorned with twinkling lights and carefully placed ornaments. Beneath it, a sea of wrapped presents waited for morning—but one package had already drawn a thief’s attention.
Mittens, Emily’s gray tabby cat, lounged beneath the tree like a queen on her throne. Her emerald eyes flicked between the dancing lights and the carefully tied ribbons on the presents. But one box, wrapped in shiny silver paper and adorned with a bright red bow, seemed to hold particular interest.
Emily, sitting on the couch with a mug of hot cocoa, caught sight of her cat’s antics. “Mittens,” she scolded gently, “you know you’re not supposed to be under there.”
The cat ignored her, as cats do, and stretched lazily, her paw “accidentally” nudging the enticing package. Emily laughed softly. “Fine, you win. It’s Christmas Eve, after all.”
As the evening wore on, Emily finished hanging the last of the stockings and decided to turn in for the night. But as she stood, Mittens pounced. The silver package was now fully in her grasp.
Emily crossed her arms, amused. “Alright, let’s see what’s so special about this one.” She knelt down, retrieving the slightly crumpled package. To her surprise, the tag read: To: Mittens, From: Santa.
Emily burst out laughing. “Well, I guess this one’s for you after all.” Carefully, she unwrapped the gift, revealing a small, elegant collar with a tiny bell. The tag shimmered with Mittens’ name engraved in delicate script.
Mittens, as if understanding the significance, rubbed her cheek against the collar. Emily fastened it around her neck, where it caught the glow of the fireplace. “It suits you,” Emily said, scratching behind her ears.
In response, Mittens padded over to the couch and returned with something dangling from her mouth—a small, mouse-shaped toy she had long since claimed as her favorite. She dropped it at Emily’s feet and looked up, meowing softly.
“For me?” Emily asked, pretending to be surprised. “How thoughtful!”
She picked up the toy and gave it a dramatic hug. Mittens purred loudly, her tail curling in satisfaction.
As the snow continued to fall outside, Emily settled back onto the couch, Mittens curling in her lap. Beneath the glow of the Christmas tree, two hearts—one human, one feline—shared the joy of giving, and perhaps more importantly, of simply being together.
