The sun rose, scattering diamonds across the snow. For a moment, Ember’s reflection sparkled too, like she was part of winter’s masterpiece.

Frost – Sparkling mornings and icy beauty - Short Story

Ember and the Frosted Morning

The old Victorian house stood quietly on the hill, its roof cloaked in snow, its windows edged with frost. Inside, warmth and light spilled from a crackling fireplace. It was Christmas morning, and a hush lay over the world, broken only by the occasional creak of wood and the soft purring of Ember, the black cat who ruled the household.

Ember stretched languidly on her favorite spot by the hearth, her sleek fur absorbing the heat like a sponge. She had no intention of moving—at least, not until she saw it. A stray sunbeam danced across the frosted windowpane, glittering like gold dust. Her emerald eyes locked onto the light, her tail flicking with curiosity.

She padded silently to the window, her paw pads soundless on the wooden floor. Perching on the sill, she peered out. The world beyond was transformed, as if the night had woven magic into every branch and rooftop. Icicles dangled like chandeliers, and snow sparkled under the pale sun as if sprinkled with stardust.

Ember reached out a paw to touch the frosted glass. It was cold, startlingly so, and she quickly withdrew. But her curiosity remained. She pressed her nose against the window, fogging the pane with her breath, and stared out at the wonderland.

The sound of footsteps broke her trance. Mara, her human, appeared in the doorway, a knitted scarf slung around her neck. "Good morning, Ember," she said, her voice still scratchy from sleep. She held a steaming mug of cocoa in her hands, the marshmallows bobbing cheerfully on the surface.

Mara chuckled, following Ember's gaze to the window. "Beautiful, isn't it? The first real frost of the season." She set her mug down and opened the door to the porch. A blast of icy air swept in, making Ember fluff her fur in protest.

Despite the chill, Ember followed Mara onto the porch, leaping gracefully onto the railing. The air was crisp and smelled of pine and smoke. The crunch of Mara’s boots on the snow echoed in the stillness as she stepped into the yard, her scarf trailing behind her.

For a moment, Ember hesitated. She wasn’t a cat who usually ventured far from her warm domain. But something about the sparkling world called to her. She leapt down, her paws landing lightly in the snow. It was colder than she’d expected, and she hissed softly in annoyance.

Yet as she moved, her irritation faded. The snow glittered with every step she took, tiny rainbows dancing beneath her paws. Mara knelt by the frozen garden pond, brushing snow from the surface to reveal the ice beneath. "Look, Ember," she called. "It's like glass!"

Ember padded over, her green eyes wide with wonder. She pawed at the edge of the pond, watching as frost crackled beneath her touch. Mara smiled and scratched Ember behind the ears. "This is a special Christmas, isn’t it? Just you and me and this beautiful day."

The two spent the morning exploring the frosted yard. Mara built a tiny snowman near the porch, complete with a carrot nose and pebble eyes. Ember supervised, occasionally swatting at the falling snowflakes. When Mara tossed a handful of snow into the air, Ember leapt after it, her black fur dusted with white as she landed.

As the sun climbed higher, the frost began to soften, its glitter fading. Ember and Mara retreated inside, their noses pink from the cold. Ember resumed her spot by the fireplace, her fur still faintly damp from the snow. Mara sat beside her, her cocoa now replaced with a cup of tea.

"Thank you for coming outside with me," Mara said softly, running her fingers through Ember’s fur. The cat purred, a deep, contented rumble, her eyes half-closed.

Through the window, the snow still sparkled faintly, a reminder of the frosty magic of the morning. Ember and Mara watched it together, the warmth of the fire wrapping around them like a soft blanket.

And as the day stretched on, the magic lingered—not just in the frosted beauty outside but in the quiet companionship they shared. For Ember, this Christmas morning was more than just a day of frost and snow. It was a day to be part of something beautiful, a memory to warm her heart for many winters to come.

That is it for today...
