Poinsettia – A pop of holiday red - Mini Story

Under the glow of twinkling lights, a stray cat named Figaro pawed at a fallen poinsettia bloom. Ellie scooped him up, his fur soft against her holiday sweater. "You’re home now," she whispered, placing him by the tree. The red petals framed the moment—a burst of warmth on a frosty Christmas Eve.

Poinsettia – A pop of holiday red - Short Story

Figaro's First Christmas

The snow fell softly that Christmas Eve, coating the small town in a blanket of white. Ellie walked briskly down the quiet street, her arms full of wrapped packages. Her scarf, knit in festive greens and reds, trailed behind her in the chilly wind. She paused by a lamppost adorned with garlands and ribbons to adjust the bags cutting into her fingers. That’s when she saw him.

A small cat, barely more than a kitten, huddled under the poinsettia display outside the florist shop. His fur was a patchwork of black and white, matted and dusted with snow. Ellie’s heart clenched as she crouched down to get a better look.

"Hey, little guy," she murmured, setting her bags down. The cat looked up with wide, golden eyes but didn’t move as she extended her hand. He was shivering, his tiny body pressed against the red petals that had fallen from the display.

"You’re not staying out here," Ellie said, more to herself than the cat. Carefully, she reached out, and to her surprise, he didn’t resist. She scooped him up, tucking him into the warmth of her coat. He nestled in instantly, his purring a faint vibration against her chest.

Back home, Ellie set the cat down by the crackling fireplace. He padded cautiously across the room, his nose twitching as he sniffed the air scented with pine and cinnamon. A glowing Christmas tree stood in the corner, its lights casting a warm glow. Beneath it, presents were stacked neatly, wrapped in bright paper and tied with bows.

Ellie grabbed a soft blanket and made a nest for him by the fire. “Let’s get you cleaned up,” she said, fetching a bowl of warm water and a cloth. The cat, whom she decided to name Figaro, submitted patiently as she wiped away the grime from his fur.

With Figaro now clean and cozy, Ellie set out a saucer of milk and a plate with a few bits of leftover turkey. As he ate, she couldn’t help but smile. It had been years since she’d had a pet, and she hadn’t realized how much she missed the simple joy of caring for one.

Later that evening, as the snow continued to fall outside, Ellie placed Figaro in her lap. Together, they admired the Christmas tree, its ornaments reflecting the firelight. A single poinsettia bloom lay on the coffee table, vivid against the dark wood.

“You’re home now,” Ellie whispered, stroking his soft fur. Figaro blinked up at her, his golden eyes filled with trust.

The night wore on, and as the world outside grew quieter, Ellie and Figaro stayed by the fire. The poinsettia’s red petals seemed to glow brighter, a symbol of the warmth and love that had found its way into Ellie’s heart that Christmas Eve.

That is it for today...
