Inside the cabin, a small fire crackled in the stone hearth. Amelia stirred from her sleep, pulling a thick woolen blanket tighter around her shoulders. The cold was sharper this morning, seeping through the gaps in the wooden walls. She stretched, the groan of the old bedframe echoing in the quiet.
“Frosty?” she called softly.
A moment later, the answer came in the form of a light thud and the rhythmic patter of paws. Frosty, her black cat with fur as sleek as midnight, emerged from the shadows of the room. His green eyes glowed, reflecting the firelight as he gracefully leapt onto the windowsill.
Amelia smiled, watching him inspect the icicles beyond the frosted glass. Frosty had an uncanny fascination with them. Each winter morning, he’d wake before her, racing to the window to marvel at the frozen decorations.
Today was no different. The cat tapped a paw experimentally against the frosted pane, his breath fogging the glass in soft puffs. The largest icicle dangled just within his reach outside. Amelia chuckled as he tilted his head, clearly plotting his next move.
“You’re going to knock one down, aren’t you?” she teased, though her voice was hoarse from the dry winter air.
Frosty’s ears twitched, but he didn’t glance back. Instead, he crouched, his tail flicking. In a single fluid motion, he sprang, his paw tapping the window latch. It popped open with a creak, letting in a blast of icy air.
“Frosty!” Amelia scolded, but it was too late. He darted onto the narrow ledge, balancing precariously as he reached a paw toward the dangling icicle. His claws barely grazed the icy surface.
“Careful!” Amelia said, pulling on her boots and coat. She hurried to the door, yanking it open to rescue her adventurous feline.
By the time she reached the side of the cabin, Frosty had succeeded in his mission. He had swatted the icicle free, and it had shattered on the snow below, scattering fragments that glinted like tiny rainbows in the morning light. Frosty sat smugly on the ledge, his tail curling around his feet as though he hadn’t just caused a commotion.
Amelia sighed with exasperation, though she couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re incorrigible.”
She scooped him off the ledge, his warm body vibrating with a deep purr. As they stepped back inside, the sunlight caught the remaining icicles, making them gleam like gems. Amelia paused, holding Frosty close.
“Maybe you’ve got the right idea,” she murmured. “Even winter’s coldest mornings can hold a little magic.”
Frosty flicked his tail and batted at her scarf, his green eyes sparkling. Together, they settled by the fire, watching the icicles glitter as nature’s own holiday decor.
