Sorry, I didn’t see you standing there.
By Jess Rezac

sorry, i
don’t know
how to feel.

we were raised
by raised hands.

seen only
by averted eyes.

— averted eyes
teach closed mouths.

sorry, i
don’t know
what to say.

we weren’t taught
to find the words.
shown silence.

— decades of silence
can heal everything
but the pain.

sorry, i
don’t know
how to pray.

we were told
to love a god
who planned tragedies

— false idol.

probably, god
who played too many
video games.
probably, god who listened
to the wrong music.

god of megadeth,
if he was even listening
at all.

sorry, i
don’t know
how to breathe.

we weren’t even
offered stale air.

felt like a held breath.
like lungs so full,
they’re burning.

we were always
taking it all in.

sorry, i
just learned
how to laugh.
i am coming around
on tragic god.
might learn to exhale.
