9/16/23 - Filters

I learned about IIR and FIR filters today.
Using the Vertigo Sound products, I could enable the FIR filters for oversampling, so I wanted to know what kind of filters these were and what were the "standard" filters. IIR is an infinite impulse response, while FIR is a finite impulse response.

FIR takes more processor power but is more stable. They are like linear filters in EQs. Something about phase shift is not there when summing to mono, but I don't care.

IIR takes less processor power but is unstable. Why unstable? They are not going to zero (infinite). But they really are better when there are dynamics in music for some reason.

I don't know, I read all this online to find out.

Long story short, I put both processes to the test in Plugindoctor and found that IIR caused less harmonic distortion while being easier on the processor, and there didn't seem to be any phase shift issues, while FIR produced the opposite.

So don't just use the FIR option offhand without testing.

Leapwing prides itself on FIR filters, and their plugins take a lot of processor power. But are they really that good? I mean, they sound great, but would IIR sound so much different?

That's it for today. That's what I learned.
