In 2008, I started my entrepreneur journey with a lot of ideas. At that time, email applications were not that good. Gmail didn't have the concept of bundling emails for promotions and social network notifications. Nor any feature to better interact with bookings and travel information.
With a bunch of passionate individuals, we decided to create a new web mail application. Application specifications included a different tab for newsletter (to read as a feed), archive capabilities as well as advanced interaction on events (e.g. to create directly a calendar entry from an email) and social network features.
It took 5 more years for Google to redesign its Gmail application and to support this kind of use cases. So we had 5 years (at least) to come up with something and launch it. What went wrong? Execution. Our minds were overflowing with ideas. We could not prioritize and, ultimately, deliver something.
So, if ideas have value, execution is key to prove it works. When launching a startup, don't procrastinate and put your product in the hands of customers fast. First version will never be perfect, but at least you start creating a community that will help your project move forward.
