"How deeply do you understand the knowledge of the book?"
That line sums up my new understanding of the point of reading. It's not to read as many books as possible—it’s about how deeply you understand the knowledge of the book.
I think it's a good idea to read a lot. But, most books/resources are not worth learning. Skim them. Once you find a great resource, plug everything you can into it. Because we want a deep and rich understanding of the knowledge in it. We have to be very selective with what we choose to learn because it takes a lot of work. Your bar for depth of understanding is that you should be able to teach it (what I'm doing right now).
As Hormozi says: "You get more out of reading one great book five times, than reading five mediocre books...I don't read books—I study them."
But why does this matter? Why go to all this effort to study just one book?
The point of learning is to change behaviour. Duh. But what does that actually mean?
When you get a deep understanding of the knowledge in a book, it will change the way you think. If you think differently, you will take a different action to what you would've if you didn't study the book.
Bottom line: if you read something, and do not remember it, you cannot change your behaviour, so you have wasted your time.
TLDR: Don't read books, study them. Skim most. Be very selective with what you choose to learn. Get a rich understanding of the knowledge so you can apply it.
Work to see reality clearer,
Lukas
P.S. Ultimately, the point of this is to see reality more clearly. Because those ahead of you in business simply see a more accurate version of reality than you do. Meaning, they see a clearer path to the goal, which means they can make better moves that get them there more efficiently.
