"He channelled an intense force to move things forward. Elon wants to get shit done."
"He would place this urgency that he expected the revenue in 10 years to be $10 million a day, and that every day we were slower to achieve our goals was a day of missing out on that money." - On Elon in the early days of SpaceX
The title of this post is a quote from one of Nike's early executives. It sums up a common theme of history's greatest conquerors, entrepreneurs, and athletes. Getting important shit done quickly is something they all have in common.
Tactically, this means looking at your priority list, choosing the single most important thing, and doing nothing else until it's done.
I learnt this lesson the hard way: Do not have many priorities. Choose one thing. Get it done. You may be surprised at how fast you move if applied.
Being on the offense is how you get momentum. Momentum compounds, just like a snowball rolling down a steep hill. Momentum is an energy that will drive you forward on its own. Avoid losing it. It is hard to gain, easy to maintain, and effortless to lose.
PS. Use Parkison's law: set a timer that you must complete this priority by the end of. Do not take your eyes off your monitor, or your fingers off your keyboard until this timer expires. This is hard to start. But you move so much quicker. It is worth the trade. This is how you develop the skill of getting shit done.
Step by step, ferociously.
