Information Liquidity: Old Socks and Acorns

In organizations, people often focus primarily on monetary capital—money, essentially. But in practice, there are two other forms of capital rarely discussed: social capital and information capital. Tim Sanders already touched upon social capital extensively in his 2005 book, "Love is The Killer App"; it's the capital powering the network society. Information capital, however, is the dominant currency of the information society, yet we seldom read or hear anything about it.

Monetary capital, social capital, and information capital each have their own unique dynamics. If you put money in the bank, it earns interest (at least until recently 😄), and if left untouched, your capital grows. Partly for this reason, people are reluctant to stash their cash under the mattress. It's also inconvenient—every time you need it, you have to dig it out.

Surprisingly though, we do precisely that with our information capital. We stuff it into metaphorical old socks—folders, subfolders, and documents. Essentially, we scatter bits of information everywhere, like squirrels hiding acorns, and then we can't remember where we placed them. Finding information becomes a lengthy process, severely limiting the liquidity of our personal information capital. A great deal of organizational hassle stems from a serious lack of information liquidity.

I'm convinced that the more liquid our information and social capital become, the more positively they impact monetary capital. Therefore, it's high time for people and organizations to realize just how crucial information and social capital are in daily practice. This requires a certain level of digital fitness, something currently lacking. As long as your digital skills aren't up to scratch, you'll struggle to make your information capital liquid.

So, hop on the digital treadmill today! We're here to help you liquidate your information capital and become more aware of the power of your social capital.
