Letters from Somewhere No.056

September 09, 2024
Wiesmoor (East Frisia, Germany)

I don't have to find a language for a feeling of powerlessness and anger. Not anymore. A lot of things are good. Well, let's put it this way, some. The noise remains annoying. And it remains. People are only concerned with themselves. I'm no exception. And yet I am in a happy state.

We have found a few places of refuge. That was urgently needed. Because the noise is almost unbearable in the long run. Firstly, there is the Ottermeer, the beautiful lake, which we walk around once again. On the very first Monday after we change our accommodation. It's different there this time. It touches me more. The peace penetrates me more deeply. Certainly because the world around me has become louder.

Then there's a hike in the Neuenburger Urwald. A real primeval forest here in Germany. But it's not one with wild animals, not one you would imagine with the name. It's a nature reserve, a forest left to its own devices, where a tree is allowed to grow hundreds of years old. One in which an 800-year-old oak is allowed to die and fall over, and then stay that way. One that has been protected from humans for 300 years.

Then there is the Rhododendronpark Hobbie, less than 30 kilometers away from us. It's a park with lots of plants and rare tree species, a beautiful, green and very natural-looking area. The park captivates me. I love being there. Happiness and contentment, meditative movements, the sounds of nature. Wonderful.

And then there's an extensive golf course right on the doorstep. We can leave the stressful noise behind us on foot in just a few minutes and immerse ourselves in lush green surroundings. So much nature and tranquillity. There are hardly any people there either. To our surprise, we spot a group of geese walking across one of the courses, only to fly over our heads a short time later. Singing and screaming, a wonderful experience.
