Letters from Somewhere No.088

Quimper (Finistère, France)

Above the deep blue water, on whose surface the sunbeams glitter, stretches a light blue, cloudless sky. Two green-covered islands rise from the sea in the distance. In front of them, the white, wind-curved sails of a boat that gently glides across the water. The sun shines.

I'm sitting on a flat spot amid the rock formation that begins at the top of the GR34 trail and plunges into the sea before me. We are nearing the end of a small hike that began and ends here by the sea. I don't know how long we've been here, but it's definitely not long enough. Because it is beautiful. So beautiful that I never want to leave this place.

It affects me so differently than the city. The city wears me down, the never-ending noise pulls at me, and the confinement suffocates me. But here by the sea, it's different. Here I can breathe and feel free. The rushing of the water and the whistling of the wind are not annoyances. Being by the sea, but also on a hike, that is healing for me.

I wish that I could live permanently in such a place. But I also know that this won't happen for now. We have decided on a different direction. It's not forever, but for the next phase. We are returning to Germany. Yet the dream of the sea and a house near the sea, this remains. More than that, it is more alive than ever.
