Hoymille (Hauts-de-France, France)
We have left the silence of nature behind us. And with it, the peace that comes with it. There is no such thing here. Our accommodation is located on the upper floor under the roof of a house that looks new from the outside, but inside is marked by time. But also by the rather inadequate care of the owner.
It is situated on a busy street during rush hours that allows no peace. To my own surprise, however, I can bear this well. What burdens me more, though, are the sounds from the rooms below us. I hear their voices, even their footsteps when walking. Fortunately for us, the house is often empty during the day, so it remains almost exclusively ours.
Not far from here is a small patch of forest through which one can walk very well. It has wide paths and the dense trees provide shade. Often I am completely alone on my evening walks. Except for the herd of sheep that live in a fenced area in this forest. When you cannot see them, you can smell them.
The old walls of the medieval town are overgrown and run through the entire forest area, which is one of the last in this region. Humans have spread so far and have devoured all the natural areas they could get into their too-greedy and never-to-be-satisfied jaws. It reminds me too much of Germany, which is no longer far away.
This small piece has been preserved. From civilization it offers a tiny escape, never a complete flight. Right behind it nestles the small town of Bergues, which enchants me with its medieval stone buildings. I am very surprised at how well one can explore this place on foot. It offers a small surprise at almost every corner. An old church or an old building, often a plaque in front of it that tells of their history.
High and thick walls separate the town from the rest of the world. Then there are the canals that accompany a good part of the wall system. They are home to ducks, swans and other bird species. I like to see animals, preferably when they can still live in freedom. The joy of sunny days contributes to the positive view of this place – I don't know how it would affect me if it were only covered by gray skies.
I am glad to be here, but also happy that it is only for a week. I enjoy the small excursions I can make on foot and directly from the accommodation. I work a lot and intensively. Which also means that I am so well occupied that I can usually sleep through the night and feel refreshed the next morning. Refreshed and full of energy for the next round of work. I hope this energy remains with me so that we can find a home in the coming weeks.
