Letters from Somewhere No. 108

Nordhofen Westerwald (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)

I discover the world around me. I find what's interesting not among people, but in the nearby nature. Luckily for me, forest areas are within walking distance. Dense mixed woodland with firm, wide paths or natural, soft ground.

When I'm out there alone, I often stop and look up at the canopy, sometimes set in motion by the wind or during rain, when drops fall down and land on my face. Or I watch the rays of sunlight penetrating through the dense branches.

It's the most beautiful season. The transition from a lackluster summer into autumn, which I don't know what it will bring me. But I look forward to what might come, and I'm happy to be here. I delight in the colorful diversity that this transition brings, in the fresh air and in the quietness that surrounds us.

Soon the colors will fade and then disappear. The forests will become bare and the days shorter and darker. I want to make use of this phase and go out into the forest as often as I can. Since we're now staying at least until the end of the year, my rhythm is changing too. I have time and am becoming calmer.

So this is what arriving feels like.
